Owning an older home gets easier when you know what to watch, what to maintain, and who to call.
Begin with three questions
- Is anyone in immediate danger? Leave the area and contact emergency services or the appropriate utility when there is fire, suspected gas, active electrical arcing, structural movement, or another immediate hazard.
- Is active damage occurring? Shut off water, power, fuel, or equipment only when you can do so safely. Photograph the condition and prevent further damage.
- Can the issue be safely observed? Record when it began, what changed, where it appears, and whether weather or equipment operation affects it.
